GEORGETOWN, Ky. -- Georgetown (Ky.) came out swinging against No. 1 University of Pikeville and pulled off the upset Thursday in Davis-Reid Alumni Gym. The Bears (14-2, 5-1 MSC) got within four early in the second half off a 7-0 run. The No. 18 Tigers (13-4, 4-2 MSC) answered back with a 24-9 burst that put the game under their thumb for the final nine minutes. Georgetown won 92-77.

GC coach Chris Briggs was quick to call a time out as the game got close.

“I wanted to get our guys to settle down and refocus on defense,” Briggs said. “They did a good job of responding and getting back to the basics. I’m super proud of the effort and how they’ve been practicing.”

Deondre McWhorter put the exclamation point on things with an alley-oop off a touch pass from Monty Wilson. It put the Tigers up by 10 again. Russ Middleton finished it off with an and-1. Five GC players reached double-figures.

Wilson led the way with 20. Dominique Hagans, McWhorter and Middleton all chimed in with 16 points. Hagans (11) and McWhorter (10) finished with double-doubles, hitting the glass for 21 of the Tigers 51.

Noah Cottrill rounded out the double digits with 14.

Elisha Justice got hot early in the second half, scoring all 13 of his points. But it was not enough. Keala King finished with a team-high 17 points. Bruce Reed and Josh Whitaker joined Justice with 13. Chris Cantino finished with 11 and Kenny Manigault had 10.
