Grand View Makes Big Jump in First Regular Season Poll

BALDWIN CITY, Kan. – With a victory over then-No. 2 ranked Park University (Mo.) in Parkville, Mo., the Grand View University (Iowa) men’s volleyball team moved up from No. 4 to No. 2 in the first regular season NAIA Men’s Volleyball Top 10 Poll, announced on Monday.
The Vikings went a perfect 4-0 this weekend at the Park University Pirate Invitational defeating St. Xavier (Ill.), Lindenwood-Belleville (Mo.) and Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) all in three sets. The highlight of the weekend was a four set win (26-24, 25-23, 21-25, 25-20) over Park.
Concordia University-Irvine (Calif.) kept its No. 1 spot this week after its 6-3 start to the season. The Eagles three losses have come to NCAA schools including UC Irvine, UC Santa Barbara and Grand Canyon, but they rebounded after a five-set loss to Grand Canyon by defeating the Antelopes in five sets on Jan. 18 (25-20, 18-25, 14-25. 26-24, 15-8).
Missouri Baptist holds on at No. 3 this week after its season opening three-set win over Lindenwood-Belleville and Park University fell two spots to No. 4 after going 2-1 in its host tournament. The Piratesdefeated No. 10 ranked Clarke University (Iowa) in five sets then defeated Culver-Stockton (Mo.) in three before falling to Grand View.
Hope International (Calif.) went 2-0 to open up the 2014 season with wins over University of California-Merced and Springfield College and come in at No. 5 this week.
The No. 6 through No. 10 teams all stayed the same this week, as St. Ambrose (Iowa) is No. 6, Warner (Fla.) is No. 7, CardinalStritch (Wisc.) is No. 8, Missouri Valley is No. 9 and Clarke comes in at No. 10.
Cardinal Stritch is also a perfect 1-0 with itsthree set win (25-18, 25-23, 25-21) over Lakeland College on Jan. 16.
Missouri Valley had an impressive start to its 2014 season going 4-0 defeating Cincinnati Christian, Rust College, Lourdes and College of Mount St. Joseph.
St. Ambrose is 2-0 in the early part of the season after wins over St. Xavier and Robert Morris and Clarke went 2-1 at the Pirate Invitational with wins over HLG and LBU, but fell to Park. They opened the season with a three-set win over St. Xavier on Jan. 14.
The next regular season poll will be announced on Monday, Jan. 27.
