OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — (Results) Eleven national champions were crowned Thursday at the 2014 NAIA Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving National Championships at the Oklahoma City Community College Natatorium in Oklahoma City, Okla. Oklahoma Baptist swimmers, who won six titles on the night, set NAIA National Championship records in the Men’s 200-Yard Medley Relay (1:26.83) and the Men’s 50-Yard Freestyle (Logan Lassley, 19.71). SCAD Savannah also set a NAIA National Championship record in the Men’s 800-Yard Freestyle Relay (6:34.98).
The Bison brought home the first national title of the night in the Women’s 200-Yard Medley Relay with a time of 1:41.65—less than three-tenths of a second off of the NAIA National Championship record of 1:41.40 set by former-member Fresno Pacific (Calif.) in 2012. Not to be outdone, the Oklahoma Baptist men earned a victory of their own in the Men’s 200-Yard Medley Relay, breaking their own NAIA National Championship record, set in 2013, with a time of 1:26.83.
In the 500-Yard Freestyle, freshman Courtney Hayward of Brenau (Ga.) outpaced the women’s field, finishing in 4:58.42. Joel Ax, a freshman from SCAD Savannah (Ga.) flirted with an NAIA National Championship record in the men’s race, but fell just over a second short at 4:25.67.
Junior Christine Tixier of Biola (Calif.) swam the 200-Yard Individual Medley in 2:04.48 to win the women’s event, while sophomore Jacob Anderson of Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) out-touched teammate Aaron Buchanan for the men’s title in 1:49.86.
Defending national champion Laura Galarza, a junior from Oklahoma Baptist, captured her second-straight title in the 50-Yard Freestyle, covering two lengths of the pool in 22.86. Galarza’s teammate, junior Logan Lassley of Oklahoma Baptist, won the men’s race with an NAIA National Championship record-setting time of 19.71.
Oklahoma Baptist won the Women’s 800-Yard Freestyle Relay title with time of 7:38.21, while SCAD Savannah (Ga.) brought home the men’s championship in NAIA National Championship record-setting fashion with a time 6:34.98, breaking the previous record set by Oklahoma Baptist in 2012.
Junior Jarod Haynes of Oklahoma Baptist, who finished second in the 3-Meter Diving finals to teammate Mark Pontier yesterday, won the Men’s 1-Meter Diving title with a score of 183.30.
After today’s events, Oklahoma Baptist leads both the women’s and men’s fields with 267 and 301 points, respectively. On the women’s side, SCAD Savannah (158 points) and Olivet Nazarene (150 points) trail the Bison. On the men’s side, Olivet Nazarene (167 points) and SCAD Savannah (157 points) round out the top three.
The NAIA Men’s and Women’s Swimming & Diving National Championships will continue Friday, March 7, with swimming preliminaries beginning at 10 a.m. CST and finals resuming at 6 p.m. at the Oklahoma City Community College Natatorium. Diving action will conclude tomorrow, with the Women’s 3-Meter Diving preliminaries and finals.
