NAIA Wrestling Coaches’ Postseason Top 20 Poll

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – For the third-straight season, Grand View (Iowa) holds the No. 1 ranking in the postseason edition of the NAIA Wrestling Coaches’ Top 20 Poll, the national office announced Monday. The Vikings, who received 193 points, won their third-straight national championship after having 11-of-12 qualifiers receive All-America honors, including four national champions.

Great Falls jumped four spots into the No. 2 position with 84.5 points. The ranking is the highest for the Argonauts since topping the poll on Dec. 21, 2011. No. 3 Montana State-Northern and No. 4 Southern Oregon maintained their rankings from the final regular-season edition with 83.5 and 80.5 points, respectively. Lindsey Wilson (Ky.), which entered the national championship ranked No. 2, dropped three places to No. 5 with 73.5 points.

Four of the 10 weight classes have new top-ranked grapplers: Bryce Shoemaker (133) of Baker (Kan.), Jake Williams (149) of Cumberland (Tenn.), Chad Lowman (165) of Grand View and Jesse Hellinger (197) of Dickinson State (N.D.).

Additionally, four new teams joined the Top 20 in No. 10 (tied) Embry-Riddle (Ariz.), No. 12 Dakota Wesleyan (S.D.), No. 15 Dickinson State and No. 16 Baker. Dakota Wesleyan, Dickinson State and Baker were all ranked at some point earlier this season, while Embry-Riddle is receiving its first mention since Feb. 20, 2013.

Notes (all information dates back to 2000-01 season): Grand View’s (Iowa) No. 1 ranking is its 21st all-time, which ranks second of all programs since 2000-01 … The Vikings have held the top spot in 16-straight polls, which is the most since former member Notre Dame (Ohio) was No. 1 14-consecutive times from Nov. 24, 2009 to Feb. 22, 2011 … Former member Lindenwood (Mo.) boasts the most all-time No. 1 rankings with 39, while Notre Dame is third with 14 … Nine programs have appeared in the Top 20 for at least 20-consecutive polls, led by No. 10 Campbellsville’s (Ky.) and No. 2 Great Falls’ (Mont.) current run of 71-straight polls, dating back to 2005-06 … No. 3 Montana State-Northern is the only other school with at least 50-straight appearances (62) … Grand View joins Notre Dame and Lindenwood are the only programs to have spent an entire season ranked No. 1 (Notre Dame: 2010-11; Lindenwood: 2006-07).
