PLAINVIEW, Texas – Wayland Baptist University (Texas) recently honored head baseball coach Brad Bass for earning his 800th career win.
The Pioneers (26-10) defeated St. Gregory’s (Shawnee, Okla.), 11-5, on March 14 to give Bass his 800th win. The road victory was the 11th straight for Wayland, and the Pioneers added five more wins before a loss to No. 14 Lubbock Christian ended their 16-game win streak, the third-longest in program history.
Bass was honored for reaching the 800-win milestone during a short program at Wayland’s Wilder Field prior to Tuesday’s 5-1 victory over University of the Southwest (Hobbs, N.M.).
Bass, who started the season 14th on the NAIA’s winningest active coaches list, now owns a record of 807-696-3. He has been named Sooner Athletic Conference Coach of the Year twice (1997 and 2003) and was the NAIA Region VI Coach of Character in 2005.
Coaching at Texas Wesleyan for eight years before coming to Wayland where he is in his 18th year, Bass has had seven 30-plus win seasons and three 40-plus win seasons, the highest coming in 2008 and 2009 when the Pioneers won 43 games both years.
While at Texas Wesleyan, Bass coached the Rams to two Heart of Texas Conference Championships in 1989 and 1995, and was named the conference’s coach of the year in 1989.
Over his 33-year career, Bass has coached 15 NAIA All-Americans and six MLB draft picks.
