GREENVILLE, S.C. – (Box Score | Invitational Schedule) No. 1 Davenport (Mich.) had seven different players net at least one goal, as the Panthers defeated No. 4 Lourdes (Ohio), 23-11, in the second semifinals game of the 2016 NAIA Men’s Lacrosse National Invitational Friday night at Sirrine Stadium.
With the win, Davenport (19-2) advances into the finals of the national invitational and will face No. 2 Missouri Valley, who defeated Siena Heights (Mich.), 8-7, in double overtime, Saturday at 5 p.m. EDT.
Second Team All-American Jarred Riley netted a pair of goals to start the game and give Davenport an early 2-0 lead. The two teams traded goals, before the Panthers added an unassisted goal in the final minute of the period to take a 4-1 lead.
Davenport scored three of the first four goals of the second stanza to extend their lead to 7-2 with 10:56 remaining. A minute later, Tanner Jaramillo scored a goal for Lourdes to cut the deficit to 7-3. An own goal for Davenport sparked a 5-0 run, spanning 4:24, to extend the Panthers lead to 12-3. The Gray Wolves responded with a four goal run, including two from Danny Bichsel to cut the deficit to 12-7 at the break.
It was an evenly matched first half as Davenport held a slight edge in shots (24-21), face-off’s (11-10) and both teams scooped up 23 ground balls.
The second half began similar to the first, as Davenport scored a pair of goals in the first three minutes to extend their lead to 14-9. Lourdes responded with back-to-back goals to cut the deficit to 14-9 with 10:11 remaining in the third quarter. Davenport scored nine of the final 11 goals of the game for the 23-11 final
Bryan Larocque registered a game-high eight goals in the win for Davenport. Jarred Riley tallied nine points (six goals, three assists), while Paul Schalau finished with seven (three goals, four assists). Goalkeeper Logan Poe finished with 12 saves to earn the win in the cage.
Bichsel ended the game as the top scorer for Lourdes with four goals. Jared Yoshino, Dalton Vowles, and Jaramillo each netted a pair of goals in the loss. Goalkeeper Conner Mishler finished with 15 saves, including 11 in the second half.
Lourdes is eliminated from the National Invitational and ends the year with a 15-4 record.
