ANN ARBOR, Mich. -- The Lawrence Technological (Mich.) University men's baseball team defeated NCAA Division I University of Michigan - Ann Arbor 8-3 on Wednesday evening in Ann Arbor, Mich. The win gives Lawrence Tech their first win over an NCAA division one program history.
Lawrence Tech (17-9) used a six-run seventh inning to take an 8-3 on the Wolverines. After trailing 3-2, the Blue Devils Tyler Cleasby (SO/Commerce, Mich.) scored on a Max Cadman(SO/Hartland, Mich.) double to right field to cut the lead to 3-3. Cadman scored on a muffed throw to give Lawrence Tech their first lead of the game at 4-3. Michael Rinke(SR/Dryden, Mich.) made it 5-3 following his RBI single that scored Mackenzie McGough(SO/Fostoria, Mich.). Joseph Russo (SO/Sterling Heights, Mich.) reached base on an error, scoring Rinke and Eddie Dopkowski (FR/Romeo, MI) to push the Lawrence Tech lead to 7-3. Logan Barker (FR/Chatham, VA) scored off a Tyler Childs (SO/Burt, Mich.) RBI single to shortstop to make it 8-3 Blue Devils.
Lawrence Tech's Alek Wietrzykowski (FR/Toledo, Ohio) started the game on the mound going one inning followed by Sam Brace in the second inning and James Castiglione in the third inning. Simon Lidwell (SO/Sterling Heights, Mich.) entered in the fourth inning and game up one run on two hits followed by Matt Baker (SO/Traverse City, Mich.) who allowed one run on one hit with two strikeouts as Lawrence Tech limited the Wolverines to seven hits and three runs over five innings.
The Blue Devils trailed Michigan 2-0 heading into the fifth inning, but Tyler Childs scored an unearned run when Max Cadman reached on a throwing error by the shortstop to cut the lead to 2-1. Michigan retook a two-run lead with a run in the bottom of the fifth, but a home run by Michael Rinke made it 3-2.
Matt Blunk (SO/Ann Arbor, Mich.), an Ann Arbor native, shut down Michigan in the bottom of the sixth inning to earn the win, giving up a hit and a walk as Lawrence Tech took the lead in the top of the seventh inning. Caleb Homan (SO/Strongsville, Ohio) pitched the seventh and the eighth inning, shutting down the Wolverines with one strikeout and no hits allowed. David Klug(SO/Traverse City, Mich.) closed the game, pitching the ninth and faced the minimum with one strikeout.
Lawrence Tech is back on the diamond Thursday, March 15 at Central Michigan University starting at 3:05 p.m.
