*Update: As of 8/17/2017 women’s volleyball and women's soccer have been added as teams that will receive a release from Marygrove College effective immediately. See the letter excerpt below for more details.

Marygrove College (Detroit, Mich.) announced on August 9, 2017 that it will end its undergraduate programs at the end of the 2017 fall semester. Men’s soccer, women’s soccer, and women’s volleyball will compete as planned for the fall 2017 semester. Marygrove’s winter and spring sports including men’s and women’s basketball and baseball are discontinued immediately.

Effective August 10, 2017, all student-athletes associated with the men’s and women’s basketball and baseball teams will be free to transfer without having to sit out the required 16-week residency period if they transfer within the first two academic terms. This means a student would not need a release in order to compete immediately if they transfer within the fall 2017 and spring 2018 academic terms. These students must meet all other eligibility requirements in order to be able to compete.

Additionally, NAIA coaches may contact men’s and women’s basketball student-athletes or baseball student-athletes to initiate a conversation about transferring. The NAIA bylaws regarding notification will be waived pursuant to the letter provided by Marygrove College. (See excerpt of letter below.)

Marygrove College men’s or women’s soccer student-athletes and women’s volleyball student-athletes will be held to the standard recruiting and transfer requirements as these programs are still competing for the institution through the fall 2017 academic term. Therefore, if students associated with these programs wish to transfer at this time, they will be required to serve the 16-week residency period.  Coaches may not contact the men’s and women’s soccer student-athletes or the women’s volleyball student-athletes as they are still identified with Marygrove College.

The Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference currently has an interconference transfer regulations for student-athletes who transfer within the conference. Please contact Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference Commissioner Rob Miller at rmiller710@yahoo.com for further information regarding how the interconference transfer requirements will be enforced for Marygrove College student-athletes.

Letter excerpt:

This letter will also serve as a broad release for all student-athletes participating in baseball and men’s and women’s basketball to be contacted and recruited by interested institutions immediately. Transcripts will be made available to all student-athletes for use in the transfer process.

Student-athletes choosing to remain at Marygrove College will receive all athletic scholarships as offered through the remainder of fall 2017 when the college’s undergraduate operations cease.

For questions regarding the student-athlete release, please contact Stephen Bloomfield, director of athletics and wellness for Marygrove College, at (313) 927-1391.
