Indiana Wesleyan Edges Lourdes

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. (Box Score)- Patrick Hopkins scored five points in the final minutes to give #7 Indiana Wesleyan a 62-60 overtime win over Lourdes (Mich.) in the first round of the 22nd annual NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship. The 2013 event is being held at the Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks.

Trailing by one, Hopkins scored on back-to-back possessions to put the Wildcats in front 61-58 with under two minutes left in overtime. A Corey Harvey jumper put Lourdes within one (61-60) and followed with a defensive stop to get the ball back with 30 seconds left. After a Lourdes timeout, the Grey Wolves missed on four chances to go-ahead and Hopkins secured the rebound and went to the free throw line with 10 three seconds left. The senior converted 1-of-2 free throws and Lourdes guard Remy Fleurima drove the length of the floor, was fouled but missed two free throws with .1 second to go.

Hopkins tallied a game-high 19 points and 13 rebounds while George Jones IV scored 14, going 2-for-3 from beyond the arc. Indiana Wesleyan shot 50% for the game.

The game was tight the entire way, especially in the first half where there was four ties and 10 lead changes. The Wildcats took a 30-29 into the break and extended its lead to 45-38 on an Aaron Martin three-pointer at the 8:35 mark. A three-pointer by Jones put the Wildcats up 49-41 but Lourdes rallied late, scoring the final seven points of the game to send it into overtime tied at 55.

Lourdes shot 40% from the field and was led by Corey Harvey with 12 points and 10 rebounds. Alex Davis added 10 points and six boards. The Gray Wolves end the season with a 22-10 record.

Indiana Wesleyan advances to the second round for the fifth time overall and fourth time in the last five years. The Wildcats, now 26-6 on the year, will play either #10 Dordt (Iowa) or Northwest (Wash.) on Friday at 10:15 a.m. The 32-team, single elimination tournament concludes Tuesday, March 12, with the championship game to tip-off at 8 pm.
