GRAND RAPIDS, Mich. - The No. 25-ranked Madonna University men's basketball team used a 23-0 run midway through the second half to upend No. 6-ranked Davenport, 82-69, in a Wolverine-Hoosier Athletic Conference game at the DU Student Center on Wednesday night (Dec. 12).

The win - MU's second straight over a ranked opponent - moved the Crusaders to 8-4 overall and 5-2 in WHAC play. The loss - DU's first at home this season and first against a non-NCAA Division I opponent - dropped the Panthers to 10-2 on the year and was their first in conference action after six straight victories.

Junior All-American Bobby Naubert (Livonia, Mich. / Stevenson) led MU with 30 points, just one away from matching his career high as he passed the 1,000-point mark in his careeer. Naubert - who now has 1,008 points in his two-plus year career - shot 10-for-13 from the floor and went 8-of-10 from the foul line while recording eight assists as well. Junior guard Travis Schuba (Rapid City, Mich. / Kalkaska) poured in 16 points, knocking down a trio of 3-pointers while classmate Fred Williams (Oak Park, Mich. / Berkley) added 14 markers as part of a Madonna offense that shot 61.7 percent from the floor (29-for-47) for the game.

The Crusaders fell behind 5-2 early before a Naubert jumper followed by a layup from sophomore Donald Owens (Detroit, Mich. / Inkster) put MU on top for good, 6-5, with 14:58 left in the first half. Naubert converted a driving layup and freshman Tyler Stewart (Canton, Mich. / Salem) hit one of MU's 11 triples to put the visitors in front by six, 11-5 with 13:25 to go.

MU pushed its lead out to as many as nine before DU clawed back into the game to pull within one, 18-17, with 9:15 left. Madonna then went on a 13-4 run over the next 3:28 to go back on top by 10, 31-21, after Naubert capped the run by converting an old-fashioned three-point play.

The Panthers were able to pull within four, 40-36, heading into intermission using a 15-9 run over the final four minutes of the half.

Coming out of the break MU saw its lead dwindle to one, 48-47, over the first 4:15 and the Crusaders clung to a two-point cushion, 53-51, with 13:11 to go.

After committing four turnovers and missing a handful of shots to open the half, the Crusader offense caught fire as a Naubert jumper with 12:59 left began the 23-0 run that turned a two-point lead into a commanding 25-point lead, 76-51, with 7:28 to go in the game.

Schuba accounted for six points during the run with Naubert and Williams adding five markers and junior Matt Jenkins (Plymouth, Mich. / Fr. Gabriel Richard Catholic) chipping in with four points of his own as MU took control of the game.

The Crusaders held the Panthers - who shot just 34 percent (26-for-75) from the floor for the game - at bay the rest of the way, never letting their lead slip below 13 points the remainder of the game for the 82-69 win.

Freshman Dominez Burnett led DU with 27 points while JaVontae Ford registered a double-double with 15 points and a game-high 11 rebounds.

MU returns home for its third straight game against a ranked opponent, hosting No. 9-ranked Grace College on Friday night (Dec. 14) in the second game of the 2012 Hines Park Ford Crusader Classic at the Activities Center.
