ORANGE CITY, Iowa -- Ben Miller scored a career-high 34 points in leading 10th-ranked Northwestern (Iowa) to a 96-69 win over #8 Doane (Iowa) in a GPAC men's basketball showdown played Saturday afternoon in the Bultman Center. Northwestern runs its record to 7-2 in the GPAC, 13-4 overall.
Miller converted 13 of his 18 field goal attempts and went a perfect 7-for-7 from the free throw line en route to his new career high, surpassing his old mark of 31 points scored earlier this year against Hastings (Neb.). The senior also pulled down 13 rebounds for his sixth double-double of the season and 21st of his career. Miller dished out a game-high seven assists as well.
After Doane began the game with a 3-pointer for its only lead of the game, Northwestern went on a 9-3 spurt to grab a 9-6 advantage. Doane scored the next basket to get within one but Northwestern followed with an 11-0 run and surged ahead 20-8 with 12 minutes left in the first half.
Doane charged back and was within six (24-18) before a 15-2 Northwestern run stretched the lead to 39-20 at the five minute mark. The Red Raiders led 51-31 at the break, shooting 54% from the field while limiting Doane to just 32% in the first half.
Northwestern continued its dominance in the second half, holding a 20-point lead throughout the final 20 minutes.
The Red Raiders shot 54% for the game and outscored Doane 62-38 from inside the paint. Stu Goslinga scored 14 points and grabbed four rebounds and both Zack Leeper and Daniel Van Kalsbeek also scored in double figures with 11 and 10 points, respectively. Northwestern held a huge advantage on the boards, out-rebounding Doane 52-25. Van Kalsbeek pulled down a season-high nine rebounds.
