KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Darien Moore of Concordia (Ore.) has been named the NAIA National Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week and Justin Scruggs of Wayland Baptist (Texas) has been selected as the NAIA National Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Moore and Scruggs were selected based on their performances from March 17 – 23. This is the second award of the 2014 outdoor season.
Moore, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., crushed the school record in the hammer throw on March 22 at the NCAA Division III Lewis & Clark Spring Break Open. His hammer throw broke a mark previously held by two-time NAIA national champion Greg Schultz of Concordia. Moore uncorked a 213-2 (64.97 meters) toss in the hammer to add nearly three feet to Schultz’ best mark of 210-9. In addition to the NAIA’s top mark in the hammer this year, Moore also opened his 2014 outdoor campaign with the nation’s No. 1 effort in the shot put with a 60-6 (18.44 meters) toss and holds a six-foot advantage over the NAIA’s No. 2 mark. Moore has already reached the NAIA championship qualifying ‘A’ standard in three events as he posted the NAIA’s No. 2 mark in the discus with a 171-2 (52.17 meters) this weekend.
Moore also won the national NAIA Indoor Field Athlete of the Week on Feb. 19.
Scruggs (pictured top left), a sophomore from Nashville, Tenn., recorded the fastest 100-meter time in the NAIA this year at the War Hawk Classic, hosted by NCAA Division II McMurray (Texas) on March 22. He took first in a field of 30 runners with a clocking of 10.42. That effort would have won the NAIA National Championship event last season. He was also a member of the 4x100 relay team (40.85), which now stands with the top mark this year in the NAIA.
