Dakota State Punches Final Ticket Into Second Round
POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. (Box Score)- Dakota State (S.D.) upsets the No. 5 seed Warner Pacific (Ore.) 89-80 in the highest scoring game in the championship so far in the final game of the first round of the 2013 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship. The 2013 event is being played at the Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo.
John Lamb led all scorers with 26 points, 18 of which came in the second half, to lead Dakota State to victory.
The first half was fast paced, up and down basketball, which saw both teams shoot over 60% from the field. Dakota State got out to an early 4-point lead, but much of the first half saw Warner Pacific with the lead, although their largest lead was only 7 points mid-way through the first half. The half ended with Warner Pacific holding a 45-42 advantage.
Early in the second half, Dakota State tied the game at 50, and then took a 57-50 lead thanks to a 7-0 run. They later extended the lead to 10, thanks to the shooting of John Lamb, at 72-62. Warner Pacific responded by tying the game at 78, only to see Dakota State increase their defensive pressure to close the game out with an 11-2 run to win the game 89-80.
Dakota State had five scorers in double digits, led by Lamb's 26 points, including 6 three pointers. Cameron Krump scored 19, Marcus Smith and Luke Lamb each added 14, while Yusuf Vinson added 10.Dakota State shot 60% for the game, including 10 three pointers.
Warner Pacific was led in scoring by Stephen Harris's 25 points and 5 rebounds. Coletun Tarr added 14 points and Doug Thomas had 10. Warner Pacific shot 48% for game, although they struggled with their shot in the second half shooting only 38% after their hot first half start. They end their season at 27-7.
Dakota State improves to 23-9 on the year and will play St. Thomas (Fla). in the second round on Friday, March 8 at 9:15pm.
