POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. (Box Score)- #10 Dordt College (Iowa) marches into the quarterfinals once again as they defeat #7 Indiana Wesleyan 75-62 in the second round of the 2013 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship. The 2013 event is being played at the Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo.
Dordt shot 56% from the field and had four players score in double figures, led by senior All-American Trevor Wolterstorff with 21. Austin Katje netted 16, including four three-pointers.
The Defenders broke a 10-10 tie with a 12-2 run, sparked by six points by Jordan Vogel, to go ahead 22-12 at the eight minute mark. A jumper by Shawn Keizer gave Dordt its biggest lead of the first half (27-14) as they held the Wildcats without a field goal for over nine minutes. The Defenders led 35-24 the break.
A three-pointer by Shawn Keizer put Dordt up 47-32 but the Wildcats made one last charge, cutting it to 55-48 at the 10-minute mark after basket by Patrick Hopkins. The Defenders put the game away, however, with a 13-4 run, led by Wolterstorff once again who scored six points during that stretch.
Shawn Keizer came off the bench to score 13 points, going 5-for-6 from the field, and Jordan Vogel added 10 for the Defenders. Senior Chris Sievers scored his 1,000th career point in the second half, the fourth current Defenders player to reach that milestone.
Hopkins led Indiana Wesleyan with 30 points, tying for the most points scored in a game at this year's championship. Taylor Schoen added 13 points and seven rebounds but the Wildcats struggled from the perimeter, shooting just 8% (1-for-12) from the three-point arc.
Dordt College improves to 28-6 on the year and will play either #2 Cardinal Stritch (Wis.) or Bellevue (Neb.) in Saturday's quarterfinal at 3:00pm. The 32-team, single elimination tournament concludes Tuesday, March 12, with the championship game to tip-off at 8 pm.
