POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. - (Box Score) Top seed Northwood (Fla.) held off a valiant comeback bid from Marian (Ind.) and defeated the Knights, 62-54, in the second round of the NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship. The 2012 event is being held at the Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo.
Marian scored the first four points of the game but it was all Northwood for the rest of the first half. A 10-0 run put the Seahawks up for good and they followed with a 9-2 charge to open up a 33-18 lead at the break. Jonathan Dunn was unstoppable in the first half, putting in 16 on 7-of-10 from the field.
Northwood forward Patrick Horstmann drained a three-pointer to start the second half and another basket by Horstmann gave the Seahawks their largest lead, 43-23 at the 16 minute mark. Marian, however, charged back and went on a 16-4 run of its own to get within eight (47-39) but could not get any closer.
The Seahawks shot 46% for the game and were led by Dunn, who finished with 23 points. Patrick Horstmann (15 points, 11 rebounds) and Masse Doumbe (12 points, 10 rebounds) recorded double-doubles.
Marian, playing in its first trip to the national tournament since 2004, shot 41% for the game after going just 8-for-26 (31%) in the first half. Aaron Evans scored 20 to lead the Knights and Alex Sylvester added 17 points and eight rebounds. Marian ends the season with a 20-11 record.
The top-seeded Seahawks, now 32-3, will face No. 8 Northwest (Wash.) in the quarterfinals on Saturday at 5:00 p.m. CST.
