By Chad Waller, Director of Communications & Sports Information
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Darien Moore of Valley City State (N.D.) has been named NAIA National Men's Indoor Field Athlete of the Week and Gregory Turner of Wayland Baptist (Texas) has been tabbed as the NAIA National Men's Indoor Track Athlete of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Moore and Turner were selected based on their performances from Feb. 4 - 10.
Moore, a sophomore from Bakersfield, Calif., won both throws on Feb. 9 at the NCAA Division I North Dakota State University Bison Open, as well as established stadium and meet records. He also set a personal and school record with his heave of 17.87 meters (58-7 ½) in the shot put. He is currently ranked first in the NAIA this year in the weight throw with his mark of 20.51 meters (67-3 ½) and third in the shot put.
Turner, a senior from West Sacramento, Calif., finished in the top three in both the 60 and 200-meter runs at the NCAA Division I University of New Mexico Don Kirby Elite Indoor on Feb. 8. He posted the fastest time in the NAIA in the 200 meters (20.97) and broke his own school record set at the 2012 NAIA National Championships. In a field of mostly NCAA Division I runners, he took second by 1/100th of a second to an Ohio State competitor. In the 60 meters, he finished with the NAIA's second-fastest time (6.74) this year and missed breaking an eight year-old school record by 1/100th of a second. His mark on Feb. 8 was third overall amongst the competition.
