Midland Earns Overtime Win Over York

POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. (Box Score) - Midland (Neb.) advances to its first ever quarterfinals as they defeat York (Neb.) 76-71 in overtime in the second round of the 2013 NAIA Division II Men's Basketball National Championship. The 2013 event is being played at the Keeter Gymnasium on the campus of College of the Ozarks in Point Lookout, Mo.

This was the third overtime game of the championship and the second for York, who defeated #9 Davenport 78-77 in the first game of the championship.

Tied at 64 heading into the extra period, Midland guard James Parrott scored five of his teams' next seven points and put the Warriors up 71-67. After a pair of free throws by York, Ben Imig floated in a runner putting Midland back in front 73-69. A pair of free throws by Heyvis Jackson made it a one possession game once again with a minute to go but Midland made just enough free throws down the stretch to punch its ticket into the quarterfinals.

Midland trailed by as much as 14 in the first half but fought back to get within striking distance by halftime, 32-28.

The backcourt duo of Parrott and Imig combined for 49 points to lead Midland. Parrott hit for 25 points and six rebounds while Imig scored 24, going 9-for-15 from the floor. Galen Gullie and Jerome Vaughn were also in double figures with 12 and 11 points, respectively. Midland shot 42% from the floor and held a 39-32 advantage on the boards.

Thaddeus Varmall led York with a game-high 26 points while Jackson registered a double-double with 14 points and 11 rebounds. The Panthers shot 40% from the field but struggled to shoot just 13% from beyond the arc (2-for-16). York ends its season with a 24-9 record.

Midland moves on with a 21-12 overall record and will play either #1 William Penn (Iowa) or Bethel (Ind.) on Saturday at 1:00pm. The 32-team, single elimination tournament concludes Tuesday, March 12, with the championship game to tip-off at 8 pm.
