POINT LOOKOUT, Mo. (Box Score) - Cardinal Stritch scored eight of the final 11 points in the second overtime to defeat #10 Dordt College (Iowa) in the quarterfinal round of the 2013 NAIA Division II Men's National Basketball Championship. The Wolves advance to the semifinal for the first time in its program's history.
Yet another classic at the championship, packed with drama and players from both team making big play after big play. The game featured 10 lead changes and 12 ties while the largest lead for either team was seven. This was just the third double-overtime game in the championship history and first since the 2005 season.
Dordt had its final lead (73-72) on a basket by Cliff Warner but a runner in the lane by Nick Ford put Cardinal Stritch back on top with 1:32 left and they would not trail again. Several defensive stops coupled with going 7-for-8 from the free throw line over the final 61 seconds preserved the win for Cardinal Stritch.
Derek Semanas scored a game-high 22 points, all but three coming in the second half and overtime periods. Both Nick Ford and Darren Moore scored 18 points each and Tony Smit put in 13, going 3-for-6 from beyond arc. Moore pulled down 15 rebounds to help the Wolves win the battle on the boards, 38-33.
Cardinal Stritch held a five point lead at the break but a three-pointer by Austin Katje put Dordt down one, 36-35. The Wolves quickly went back up by six but Dordt tied it at 43 on a jumper by Trevor Wolterstorff. The game was tied four more times until Cardinal Stritch went on a 7-0 run and led 59-52 after a basket by Nick Ford with 1:40 left to play. There was no quit in the Defenders, however, as a Nathan Rindels three-pointer started a dramatic comeback, capped by a Katje three-pointer from the left corner with four seconds to go that put the crowd in a frenzy and sent the game into overtime tied at 61.
A three-pointer by Smit put the Wolves in front at the start of the first overtime but baskets by Jordan Vogel and Kyle Lindbergh gave Dordt its first lead since the first half, 65-64. The lead was short lived as Semenas knocked down his third three-pointer but Chris Sievers tied it again at 67 with 1:14 left to go. The Defenders got a stop on the defensive end and had a chance to win it in the first overtime but a Warner jumper was just of the mark and the game went into the second overtime tied at 67.
Dordt shot 42% for the game and was led by Sievers with 19 points, followed by Katje with 18. Jordan Vogel added10 for the Defenders, who end the season with a 28-7 overall record.
Cardinal Stritch improves to 33-3 and will play either #11 Indiana University Southeast or College of the Ozarks (Mo.) in the second semifinal game on Monday, March 11 at 8:00pm. The 32-team, single elimination tournament concludes Tuesday, March 12, with the championship game to tip-off at 8 pm.
