INDIANAPOLIS - The Webber International (Fla.) men went undefeated in match play to win the 2012 NAIA Invitational, while the women fell short in the final match against University of Pikeville. The men defeated Calumet (Ind.) 3-0 in a best of five match play format with scores of 224-202, 187-185 and 214-156. The second-seeded men battled through the bracket defeating four different teams to take home the title. The women suffered its only loss to Pikeville (Ky.) in the finals.
"We prepared for this as a dress rehearsal for nationals, and we prepped as though this was the national championships, so we're pleased with the results," Webber International men's coach Del Warren said. "As dress rehearsals go, this was pretty good."
Marcelo Suartz, Diana Zavjalova and Katie Thornton were voted to the all-tournament team, with Suartz and Zavjalova both being named NAIA tournament MVPs.
The NAIA has 60,000 student-athletes participating at nearly 300 member colleges and universities throughout the United States and Canada. Divided into 25 conferences and the Association of Independent Institutions, the NAIA offers 23 championships in 13 sports. A total of 23 men's teams and 16 women's teams competed in the NAIA Invitational.
Both the men and women will compete in the Intercollegiate Team Championships in Lincoln, Nebraska, April 19-20.
