Women’s Tennis National Championships Recap – Day 2

MOBILE, Ala. – (Scores) (Bracket) After two days of action at the NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championship in Mobile, Ala., at the Mobile Tennis Center, eight teams remain. Tuesday action saw two seeded teams lose. Quarterfinal action starts tomorrow at 1 p.m.

Top-seed Xavier (La.) advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Indiana Wesleyan, 5-0, Tuesday afternoon. Xavier took all three doubles points and No. 1 and 3 singles. Kourtney Howell of Xavier clinched the victory with a 6-1, 6-1, win in No. 1 singles. Xavier will face Embry-Riddle (Fla.) in the quarterfinals.

Embry-Riddle (Fla.) upset eighth-seed Westmont (Calif.), 5-2, in the second round of the national championship on Tuesday afternoon. Embry-Riddle took No. 1 and 3 doubles, to take an early 2-1 lead over Westmont. The Eagles took a 4-1 lead after taking No. 1 singles, 6-1, 6-1, and No. 2 singles, 6-2, 6-3. Westmont looked as if they would mount a comeback after taking No. 5 singles, 6-1, 6-2. However, Giovanna Tomiotto won in three sets, 6-1, 3-6, 6-2, to clinch the win for the Eagles and send them into the quarterfinals to face top-seeded Xavier.

Fifth-seed William Carey (Miss.) will advance to the quarterfinals after defeating Oklahoma Baptist, 5-0. William Carey took all three doubles and No. 5 and 6 singles for the win. In singles wins, William Carey only dropped one set. The Crusaders will face fourth-seed SCAD Savannah (Ga.) in the quarterfinals.

SCAD Savannah, seeded fourth, downed Concordia (Calif.), 5-1, in the second round of the national championship to advance to the quarterfinals. SCAD Savannah took two-of-three doubles and the top three singles to defeat Concordia. Concordia’s lone point came in third doubles with an 8-5 victory. SCAD Savannah moves on to face William Carey in the quarterfinals.

Third-seed Brenau (Ga.) advanced to the quarterfinals after defeating Olivet Nazarene (Ill.), 5-0, in the second round. Brenau swept the doubles and took first and second singles to win the match. Maria Perdomo Medina clinched the match for the Golden Tigers with a 0-6, 6-3, 6-3, win in No. 2 singles. Brenau will face Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) in the quarterfinals.

Sixth-seeded Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) defeated Vanguard (Calif.), 5-0, in the second round. Lindsey Wilson took all three doubles to take a lead going into singles. The Blue Raiders took No. 5 and 6 singles, 6-0, 6-1, to clinch the victory for the Blue Raiders. Lindsey Wilson will face Brenau in the quarterfinals tomorrow.

Northwood (Fla.) upset seventh-seed Lewis-Clark State (Idaho), 5-3, in the second round. Northwood jumped out to a 3-0 lead after sweeping the doubles. Lewis-Clark State started a comeback in singles as they took three points, however the comeback was too late. Northwood claimed No. 1 and 3 singles to clinch the match for the Seahawks. Northwood will play second-seed Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) in the quarterfinals.

Auburn Montgomery is moving to the quarterfinals after defeating SCAD Atlanta (Ga.), 5-0, in the second round. Auburn Montgomery swept the doubles to take an early 3-0 lead. Tiffany Williams and Chanel Cunningham clinched the match for the Warhawks with singles wins. Auburn Montgomery will face Northwood (Fla.) tomorrow in the quarterfinals.
