MOBILE, Ala. – (Scores) (Bracket) The semifinals are set for the NAIA Women’s Tennis National Championship in Mobile, Ala., at the Mobile Tennis Center. The top two-seeds are advancing to the semifinals, while the fifth and sixth-seeds are also moving on after upsetting the third and fourth-seeds. Semifinals action will kick off at 1 p.m. tomorrow.
Top-seeded Xavier (La.) defeated Embry-Riddle (Fla.), 5-3, but had to comeback in singles action for the victory. Xavier won No. 3 doubles, 8-3, but dropped the next two doubles matches and trailed 2-1 heading into singles. The Gold Nuggets won four of the five singles matches, while one went unfinished, to clinch the match. Kourtney Howell won 7-5, 6-1, in No. 1 singles to clinch the match for Xavier. The Gold Nuggets advanced to the semifinals where they will take on William Carey (Miss.) tomorrow. This will be the first semifinals appearance in any sport for Xavier.
Fifth-seed William Carey advances to the semifinals after upsetting fourth-seed SCAD Savannah (Ga.), 5-4, in quarterfinal action. William Carey found themselves down, 2-1, after doubles action but bounced back in singles. William Carey fell in No. 1 and No. 2 singles but answered by winning Nos. 3-6 singles to clinch the match. Julia Angerman clinched the match for the Lady Crusaders. She dropped the first game, 6-2, but rebounded to win 7-6 (7-4), 6-2. William Carey will advance to face top-seed Xavier in the semifinals.
Sixth-seed Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) will advance to its first semifinals appearance since 2009, after defeating third-seed Brenau (Ga.), 5-4. Lindsey Wilson took No. 1 and 2 doubles to hold a 2-1 lead going into singles action. Brenau started mounting a comeback as they took three singles. However, it was not enough as Anna Gaprindashvili clinched the win for the Blue Raiders. She dropped the first set 7-5 but bounced back to win 6-4, 6-3, to send Lindsey Wilson to the semifinals to face second-seed Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) tomorrow.
Second-seed Auburn Montgomery is advancing to its 14th-straight semifinals after defeating Northwood (Fla.), 5-1, in the quarterfinals. The Warhawks won 2-of-3 doubles matches to take a 2-1 lead heading into the singles. Auburn Montgomery clinched the victory by winning three singles matchups. In those matchups the Warhawks only dropped seven sets. Tiffany Williams for Auburn Montgomery won in straight sets against Valentina Souki. Auburn Montgomery will face Lindsey Wilson in the semifinals.
