Defending Champs Continue Tournament Magic

Sioux City, Iowa – (Box Score - PDF) Northwestern (Iowa) extended its tournament winning streak to 11 by breezing past Indiana Southeast, 76-56, in Wednesday’s action in the first round of the State Farm-NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship. The Red Raiders overcame 24 turnovers by shooting a sizzling 50 percent from the field.

Northwestern junior Kendra De Jong’s 18 points led a group of four double-figure scorers for the Red Raiders, who improved to 25-7 on the season. De Jong also reeled in 15 rebounds and dished out four assists. Guards Kami Kuhlmann and Mallory Cunard each added 11 points for the victors.

Indiana Southeast’s Brooke Willoughby led all players with 24 points on 8-of-20 shooting from the field. However, the Grenadiers shot only 27.9 percent as a team and were outmuscled on the boards, 53-29. The champions of the Kentucky Intercollegiate Athletic Conference fell to 26-9 in 2011-12.

Northwestern will look for its 12th-consecutive tournament win on Friday at 8:30 a.m. when it will take on Jamestown (N.D.) in second round play. Jamestown defeated Union (Ky.), 60-42, in the opening game of the tournament.
