Sioux City, Iowa – (Box Score) Mount Mercy (Iowa) concluded day one of the 2012 State Farm-NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship with a highly-contested 69-67 win over Southwestern (Kan.). The Mustangs could not breathe easy until securing the rebound off a Brittney Chamberlin miss with only 3.0 seconds remaining.
Senior guard Micha Mims made all four of her free throw attempts in the final 23.7 seconds to ice the game for Mount Mercy. She finished with 16 points and three thefts. Forward Bria Fields topped all players with 18 points. Amanda Frost (15) and Emily Greiner (10) also finished in double-figures in scoring for the Mustangs.
Southwestern freshman forward Montana Rickey posted a double-double with 10 points and 12 rebounds. Brett Bates led the team in scoring with 13 points.
Mount Mercy held a slight shooting edge from the field, 35.6 to 34.3 for Southwestern.
Mount Mercy (26-8) looks ahead to a Friday date with Morningside (Iowa) at 5:15 p.m. in the second round. The Mustangs held off Daemen (N.Y.), 65-60, immediately prior to Mount Mercy’s victory.
