Sioux City, Iowa – (Box Score) Both Hastings (Neb.) and Tennessee Wesleyan struggled through a low-scoring first half in which neither team shot better than 37.5 percent from the field. The Broncos warmed up just enough in the second half to pull away from the Bulldogs for a 57-43 first round victory at the State Farm-NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship.
Tennessee Wesleyan never could get on track offensively as it shot 5-for-28 (17.9 percent) from the field in the first half and 10-for-34 (29.4 percent) in the second half as Hastings’ Alicia Statler controlled the action down low. She tallied 15 points, 13 rebounds and three blocks.
Laurel Zwiener came off the bench to score 15 points and contribute a pair of blocks in teaming with Statler to form a potent frontcourt. The Broncos finished with a 32-18 edge in points in the paint.
Michelle Davis was the only Bulldog to notch double-figures in scoring with 12 points. Cody Houch chipped in seven points and 10 rebounds.
Hastings (22-10) has advanced to Friday’s 1:45 p.m. second round game where the Broncos will await the winner between College of the Ozarks and Valley City State (N.D.).
