Corban Prevails in Nailbiter
March 08, 2012
Sioux City, Iowa – (Box Score) Trailing 59-58 in the final seconds, Point Park (Pa.) got two cracks at a potential game-winning shot before falling 60-58 to Corban (Ore.) in Thursday’s first round contest at the State Farm-NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship.
Down one point, April Austin of Point Park lifted a floater at the rim that bounded into the left corner where the Pioneers corralled the rebound with just under seven seconds and called timeout. The ensuing inbounds resulted in an open look for Joncelyn Peterking, who could not get the point-blank attempt to go down.
Corban got the handle on the rebound and Becky Buhler sank 1-of-2 free throws with .01 seconds left, finally allowing the Warriors to exhale. Making their fifth trip to the national tournament, Corban (formerly known as Western Baptist) finally picked up its first-ever tournament victory after first round losses in each of its first four appearances.
Austin, who went over the 1,000-career point mark in the first half, finished with 16 points, second on the team behind Peterkin’s 17 points.
Corban’s Emily Tsugawa, the nation’s assists leader at 6.5 per game, led the Warriors with 14 points while adding four assists. Shayla Fetters went for 13 points, seven rebounds and five assists.
Corban (24-7) now sets its sights on a second round date on Friday at 8:45 p.m. versus the winner between Grand View (Iowa) and Saint Mary (Neb.).
