Sioux City, Iowa – (Box Score) Jennifer Jorgensen entered tournament play as the leading scorer among individuals on all 32 qualifiers, but her eight points on Thursday night were plenty enough as her Grand View (Iowa) squad came away with a 68-52 first round victory over Saint Mary (Neb.). The win marked the second time in the last three seasons that the Vikings have advanced to the second round of the State Farm-NAIA Division II Women’s Basketball National Championship in Sioux City, Iowa.
The Flames, making their first tournament appearance since 2006, put together a late charge. Down 57-44 with 7:16 remaining, Saint Mary went on a 6-0 run, highlighted by back-to-back buckets in the paint by Theresa Elworth and Kelsey Heese. An Elworth free throw then made the score 57-50 with 4:31 remaining.
A pair of free throws by Grand View’s Shelbie Beatty and a basket by Abby Mendlik pushed the margin back to double-figures. The Flames would cut the deficit no closer than nine points the rest of the way as the Vikings ended the game on an 11-2 run, taking advantage of a shorthanded Saint Mary bench.
Morgan Hamner of Grand View led all scorers with 17 points on 8-of-17 shooting. Amy Vos (16 points and 11 rebounds) and Nicole Wilson (13 points) also notched double-figure scoring totals for the Vikings.
Tiffany Anzalone paced Saint Mary with 13 points on 4-for-9 shooting from the field. Grand View (29-5) will look forward to a second round battle with Corban (Ore.) at 8:45 p.m. on Friday. Corban defeated Point Park (Pa.) 60-58 in the second-to-last Thursday contest.
