SIOUX CITY, Iowa - (Box Score) Stifling defense by No. 19 Grand View (Iowa) and stellar inside play by senior Morgan Hamner, led the Vikings to a 58-44 victory over No. 13 Purdue Calumet (Ind.) on Friday night. Hamner scored a game-high 25 points and Grand View held the Peregrines to 17 percent shooting from the floor to eliminate Purdue Calumet in its first appearance of the national championship.
Purdue Calumet struggled to score from the field as they shot 16.7 percent in the first half but managed to keep the game close as the Peregrines found themselves down by two with seven minutes to go in the first half. However, Grand View extended the lead to seven points, 30-23, going into halftime.
The offensive woes continued in the second half for Purdue Calumet, and Morgan Hamner continued to dominate the Peregrines inside. Hamner scored eight points to start the second half to oopen up the lead to 13 for Grand View.
Purdue Calumet started to inch back into the game but could not find themselves getting closer than seven points. The Vikings pulled away at the end of the game winning by 14, 58-44.
Morgan Hamner led the way for the Vikings as she collected a double-double with 25 points and 18 rebounds. Tierra Turner scored a team high 18 points for the Peregrines.
The Vikings advance to the second round to Indiana Wesleyan tomorrow, with the start time set for 8:45 p.m. at the Tyson Event Center.
