Quick start vaults No. 11 Bethel into quarterfinals
March 08, 2013
After seeing its lead shrink to five (36-31) at the half, Bethel (27-7) responded with another run to regain control and advance to the quarterfinals for the first time since 2008. The Lady Pilots began the second half much like the first as they dropped the first seven points of the frame, capped by Kristen Hicks' bucket in the paint. Bethel then maintained a double-digit lead most of the rest of the way.
The Lakers, making their first ever appearance at the Tyson Events Center after moving from NAIA Division I, got a standout performance from junior guard Casey Davis. The Country Club Hills, Ill., native posted a game high 23 points thanks mostly to 12-for-17 free throw shooting. However, Roosevelt struggled from the field and shot only 27.4 percent.
Georgia Boisse added eight points, eight rebounds and four assists for the victors. Hicks finished with 10 points, six rebounds and four steals.
Roosevelt, the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference regular-season champ, completes its season with a record of 28-7. The Lakers defeated No. 22 Friends (Kan.) in the first round.
Bethel will challenge the winner between No. 1 Morningside and No. 17 College of Idaho at 8 p.m. on Saturday in the quarterfinals.
