Dr. Thomas Howell Will Retire as GCAC Commissioner

HATTIESBURG, Miss - The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference announces that Dr. Thomas Howell will retire as commissioner as of January 1, 2014. Dr. Howell has been commissioner for over 32 years since the inception of the GCAC in 1980.
Prior to that he was a faculty athletics representative and eligibility chair of NAIA District 30. He has been a member of numerous NAIA committees and task forces and was honored with induction into the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1999 and was chosen as NAIA Administrator of the Year for 2004-2005.
He is in his 48th year of collegiate teaching and will continue to serve as a professor of history at William Jewell College, as eligibility chair for the GCAC, and as chair of the NAIA National Eligibility Committee.
The current president of the GCAC, Kiki Barnes of Dillard University said, "Dr. Howell has been a phenomenal leader for the GCAC. I am pleased to have worked closely with him for the last eight years. We appreciate his service to the GCAC and wish him well."
