KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kelsey Canavan of Lubbock Christian (Texas) has been named the final NAIA National Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week for 2011-12, the national office announced Tuesday. Canavan was selected based on her performances from Feb. 20 – 26 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.

Canavan posted back-to-back career-high scoring performances to help lead the Lady Chaparrals to a share of the Sooner Athletic Conference regular-season championship. The junior center began the week with a career-high 29 points and eight rebounds in an 85-52 thrashing of Oklahoma Christian on Feb. 23. She bettered that career-best performance with 30 points and 12 rebounds as Lubbock Christian extended its win streak to five games with an 89-68 victory against Northwestern Oklahoma State on Feb. 25. Canavan finished the week shooting 75.0 percent (24-of-32) from the field and 68.8 percent (11-of-16) at the foul line.

A native of El Paso, Texas, Canavan leads the fourth-ranked Lady Chaparrals in scoring (16.6 points per game) and rebounding (8.0 boards per game), while shooting a team-best 56.7 percent – 11th nationally – from the floor.
