KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Eric Avila of Southern Oregon has been selected as the NAIA National Men’s Outdoor Track Athlete of the Week and Darien Moore of Concordia (Ore.) has been named the NAIA National Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Avila and Moore were selected based on their performances from March 31-April 6.

Avila, a senior from Chula Vista, Calif., won the 5,000 meters at the Stanford Invitational on April 4 in Stanford, Calif. He outpaced the 22-man field in the top heat, defeating Nick Happe of NCAA Division I Notre Dame (Ind.) by a half second with a time of 13:43.05. In the process, Avila broke his own school record by nearly 20 seconds and recorded the top collegiate 5,000 meters time at any level this season. Avila, who already owns NAIA individual national championships in cross country and the distance medley relay, currently boasts the top NAIA time in the 800 Meters and the 5 Kilometers, along with the 5,000 Meters.

Moore, a junior from Bakersfield, Calif., placed in three throwing events at the dual meet between Concordia (Calif.) and NCAA Division III Willamette (Ore.) on April 5 in Willamette, Ore. Moore improved on his school record and NAIA-leading distance in the hammer throw, tossing it 6.25 meters (20.51 feet) on his final throw of the competition. In victory, Moore extended his lead over the NAIA’s No. 2 hammer thrower to more than seven feet. The NAIA-leader in the shot put recorded a second event win with a throw of 17.86 meters (58.60 feet). Finally, Moore placed second to NAIA-leader and teammate Nate Moses in the discus with a throw of 50.14 meters (164.50 feet). On the year, Moore ranks fourth in the NAIA in the discus.

With Moore’s second honor (March 26), Concordia (Ore.) has swept the NAIA National Men’s Outdoor Field Athlete of the Week awards through the first four weeks of the season.
