2013 NAIA Menís Soccer Players of the Week - No. 7
October 22, 2013
KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Alex Guyer of Hastings (Neb.) has been named the NAIA Men's Soccer National Defensive Player of the Week and Jason Walcutt of Saint Francis (Ind.) has been selected as the NAIA Men's Soccer National Offensive Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Guyer and Walcutt were chosen for their performances during the week of Oct. 14 – 20 and were selected out of a pool of conference, independent, and unaffiliated grouping award winners.
Guyer, a sophomore goaltender from Lincoln, Neb., recorded a pair of shutouts for Hastings in 1-0 victories over then-No. 14 Baker (Kan.) and Dordt (Iowa). The two shutouts, during which Guyer recorded six saves, brought the goaltender’s season total to four—just one shy of the career-high five he recorded during his freshman year. Guyer has allowed just 12 goals over 14 games this season and has recorded 57 saves during that span. He currently ranks among the NAIA leaders in goals against per game (21st, .85).
Walcutt, a junior forward from Fort Wayne, Ind., scored the game-winning goal in each of the Cougars victories last week, helping St. Francis clinch a share of the Crossroads League title for just the third time in program history. Walcutt recorded the game-winning goal in the 84th minute of the Cougars 2-1 win over conference foe Grace (Ind.) and added the game-tying (66th minute) and game-winning (84th minute) goals against Huntington (Ind.), another Crossroads League opponent. Walcutt leads the team in goals (17) and points (37). He also ranks among the national leaders in total game winning goals (2nd, 6), total goals (4th, 17), total points (6th, 37), game winning goals per game (13th, .33), goals per game (19th, .94) and points per game (42nd, 2.06).
