KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Laura Galarza of Oklahoma Baptist has been named the NAIA National Women's Swimmer & Diver of the Month, the national office announced Friday. Galarza was selected based on her performances in the month of January. She was chosen out of a pool of candidates nominated by NAIA women’s swimming & diving programs.
Galarza, a junior from Cali, Colombia, earned first-place finishes in seven-of-eight events in dual meets against NCAA Division I Louisiana State University (LSU) and NCAA Division II Colorado School of Mines. Her lone loss came in the 200-Freestyle relay against LSU. Ironically, Galarza and her Oklahoma Baptist teammates own the NAIA national championship record in that event (1:32.88), as well as in the 400-Freestyle relay (3:25.63). Both records were set at the 2013 Women’s Swimming & Diving National Championships.
Galarza is the reigning national champion in the 50-Freestyle, 100-Freestyle and 200-Freestyle. She was also part of Oklahoma Baptist’s 2013 national championship relay teams in the 200-Freestyle, 400-Freestyle, 800-Freestyle, 200-Medley and 400-Medley. This season, she owns the NAIA top time in the 100-Freestyle and the 200-Freestyle relay.
The third edition of the Women's Swimmer & Diver of the Month will be announced on Feb. 28.
