KANSAS CITY, Mo - Kourtney Tyra of Georgetown (Ky.) has been named the NAIA National Division I Women's Basketball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Tyra was selected based on her performances from Jan. 7 - Jan. 13 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/unaffiliated group winners.
Tyra, a native of McKee, Ky., averaged 18.0 points, 6.5 rebounds and 12.0 assists in Georgetown's two Mid-South Conference victories last week. The 5-foot-5 guard recorded the NAIA's fourth triple-double on the season with 14 points, 10 rebounds and 11 assists against Rio Grande (Ohio) on Jan. 10. Tyra recorded her 12th six-plus assist performance with 13 dimes in the Tigers 85-75 victory over then-No. 13 Shawnee State (Ohio) on Jan. 12, while also registering 22 points, three rebounds and five steals. She ended the week shooting 50 percent (11-for-22) from the field, 40 percent (4-for-10) from 3-point range and 90.9 percent (10-of-11) from the free throw line.
Tyra's 36 points this week gives her 1,008 for her career, which rests just two points behind 20th on Georgetown's all-time scoring list. She also ranks fifth all-time in assists (360) and ninth in made 3-pointers (104) for the Tigers.
On the season, Tyra leads the NAIA in assists per game (6.824) and is second in total assists (116). Her 13.9 points per game is tied for second on the squad.
