KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Marcel Towns of Great Falls (Mont.) has been named the NAIA National Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Towns was selected based on his performances from Jan. 7 - 13 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.
Towns, a native of Tempe, Ariz., averaged 29 points and six rebounds to lead Great Falls to a 1-1 week in Frontier Conference action. The 6-foot-2 junior guard opened the week by breaking a 42 year old program record with a 43-point effort to lead the Argonauts to a 73-71 victory against then-No. 18 Westminster (Utah) on Jan. 10. Additionally, Towns performance set the single-game mark in the Frontier Conference. He added 15 points and eight rebounds in Great Fall's weekend tilt at Montana Western. Towns shot 65.6 percent (21-of-32) for the week and connected on 72.2 (13-of-18) percent of his free throws.
Nationally, Towns leads the NAIA in steals per game (3.737) and total steals (71), while ranking fourth in total scoring (396) and 17th in points per game (20.8). He boasts 18 double-digit performances this season, including eight 20-plus efforts.
