2010 NAIA Football Players of the Week

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – The final installment of the 2010 NAIA National Football Players of the Week were announced on Monday: Chris Ruff of William Penn (Iowa.) was named NAIA Defensive Player of the Week, Ian Sanders of Southern Nazarene (Okla.) was named NAIA Special Teams Player of the Week and Shaine Tierney of Saint Francis (Ind.) was NAIA Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Nov. 8-14. These winners were chosen out of a pool of player of the week performers among 10 conferences and independents. This is the final announcement for the 2010 season.

Ruff, a 6-1, 235 lb., senior linebacker from Highland Park, Mich., helped No. 13 William Penn to a 24-7 win over No. 21 Saint Francis (Ill.) on Nov. 13. Ruff finished with a team-best 17 total tackles (13 solo), including 4.0 tackles-for-loss and one interception. The points scored by St. Francis were the lowest amount this year and as a team, posted 271 yards of offense. St. Francis entered the game averaging around 190 yards on the ground but gained 115 in the loss.

 

Sanders, a 6-0, 160 lb., freshman kicker from Oklahoma City, Okla., nailed the game-winning field goal as time expired in a win over No. 23 Langston (Okla.) on Nov. 13. He went 3-for-4 on field goals, hitting from 37 yards, 20 and the difference-maker from 37. Prior to the contest, he had attempted just three field goals on the year. He also averaged 49.2 yards on six kick-offs.

 

Shaine Tierney - St. Francis (Ind.)Tierney, a 6-2, 216 lb., senior quarterback from Stevensville, Mich., accounted for four of five St. Francis scores in the 33-21 victory against Taylor (Ind.) on Nov. 13. He passed for a career-high 351 yards on 23-for-35 attempts (.657) and two scores. On the ground, he sprung loose for 49 yards on eight carries (6.1 ypc) and two touchdowns. Both of his rushing scores were 10-plus yards in length and his two TD tosses were 51 yards and 91 yards. The 91-yard strike tied a school record for longest touchdown pass. In his career, he stands with 5,125 passing yards.
