Player of the Week - No. 2

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Keiva Council of Loyola (La.) has been named the NAIA National Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Council was selected based on her performances from Jan. 2 – 8 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.

Council continues to light up scoreboards as she averaged 28.3 points per game in leading her team to a trio of wins over the past week. In an 80-71 win over Brewton-Parker (Ga.) on Jan. 6, she blistered the net with 41 points, making her the only Wolfpack in school history to score 40-or-more points twice in one season. Council also added nine rebounds and two steals in the win. She followed that performance with 25 points, six rebounds and three assists in an 85-63 blowout win over Southern Poly (Ga.). She also posted a line of 19 points, four rebounds and six assists in Loyola’s victory over the University of New Orleans on Jan. 2. On the week, Council shot 27 for 55 (49.1 percent) from the field, including 10 of 18 from 3-point range.

The 5-foot-8 senior guard from Houston, Texas, leads all NAIA Division I players with a scoring average of 24.2 points per game and has Loyola off to a program best 13-1 start. Her 6.2 rebounds per contest rank 21st best nationally and her field goal percentage of 47.5 ranks 36th.
