NAIA Women's Indoor Track & Field Athletes of the Week - No. 3

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Avante Newsome-Gunn of Bethel (Ind.) has been named NAIA National Women’s Indoor Track Athlete of the Week and Akela Jones of Oklahoma Baptist has been selected as the NAIA National Women’s Indoor Field Athlete of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Newsome-Gunn and Jones were selected based on their performances from Jan. 27 – Feb. 2.

Newsome-Gunn, a junior from South Bend, Ind., won three events at the Taylor University Indoor Invite in Upland, Ind., on Feb. 1. She hit an NAIA qualifying standard in the 55-meter dash with a time of 7.28. Newsome-Gunn also participated in the Pilots 4x200 and 4x400 relay squads, which each bested the 10-team field. The 4x200 team also set a Bethel Indoor record with a time of 1:44.92.

Jones, a sophomore from St. Michael, Barbados, recorded an NAIA-best mark in the pentathlon at the Wichita State Varsity Apartments Invitational in Wichita, Kan., on Feb. 1. She bested the 19-woman field in the long jump (20-½), high jump (6-¾) and the 60-meter hurdles (8.49). Jones also finished second in the 800 meters (2:39.62) and the shot put (40-0) en route to a first-place finish over a field that included multiple NCAA Division I opponents.
