KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Kirk Rocha of Tabor (Kan.) has been named the NAIA Baseball National Player of the Week and teammate Jacob Webb has been selected as the National Pitcher of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Rocha and Webb were chosen based on their performances from March 17 – 23 and were selected out of a pool of conference, independent and unaffiliated group winners. The duo is the first set of teammates to sweep the award since Andy Kovarik and Brad Myjak of Saint Xavier (Ill.) in 2012.
Rocha, a native of Modesto, Calif., ended the week 15-for-23 (.652) at the dish, including three doubles and a home run to lead Tabor to a pair of sweeps against Kansas Collegiate Athletic Conference foes Saint Mary (Kan.) and Ottawa (Kan.). The senior centerfielder also tallied 11 runs scored, 11 RBI and five stolen bases. Rocha drove in at least one run in all six games, including a week-high three in an 18-0 win against the Spires on March 17 and in a 7-1 victory against Ottawa on March 22. His home run – a solo shot – came with one out in the top of the sixth inning against the Braves on March 20.
On the year, Rocha leads the NAIA with a .515 batting average, while ranking fourth in total hits (51) and fifth in total bases (79) and runs scored (36).
Webb, a sophomore from Riverside, Calif., allowed only one run and eight hits, while striking out 29, in 14 innings of work last week. In an 18-0 win against Saint Mary, Webb pitched seven innings of shutout baseball with 14 strikeouts en route to the win. He then followed that performance with another seven-inning victory against Ottawa. Webb struck out 15 Braves, while allowing four hits and two walks in the appearance.
Webb is sixth in the NAIA in total strikeouts (64) and leads the team with a 1.10 earned run average.
