ORANGE BEACH, Ala. – Top seed and defending national champion Hastings (Neb.) stayed alive, along with the other top two seeds, in the Quarterfinals of the NAIA Men’s Soccer National Championship. The Semifinals are scheduled for Friday as the top three seeds advance to the round-of-four for the first time since 2001. No. 13 William Carey (Miss.), who defeated No. 5 Rio Grande (Ohio) by a 3-1 count, joins the trio for Friday’s action.
Hastings took out unseeded Science & Arts (Okla.) by a count of 3-1. The Broncos (23-1-0) have played in three previous Semifinals (2003, 2005, and 2010) and are 1-2 all-time in those games. The Broncos face William Carey (16-3-3) at 4 p.m. CST on Friday. William Carey brings two Semifinal appearances (1997, 1998) into this year’s event. However, the Crusaders have dropped the previous two such matches.
No. 3 Baker (Kan.) eliminated No. 6 Grand View (Iowa) by a 3-1 score today. The Wildcats (20-1-1) will compete in its first-ever Semifinal as they will face No. 2 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) at 6 p.m. on Friday. The Blue Raiders (21-0-0) defeated No. 10 Southern Poly (Ga.), 3-2, in overtime to advance to their 12th semifinal overall and first since 2009. Lindsey Wilson is 8-2-1 all-time in the round-of-four.
Lindsey Wilson and Hastings have won National Championships with the Blue Raiders holding eight titles and Hastings winning the 2010 event. Baker and William Carey have never made it to the Championship final. The 53rd annual trophy will be contested for at 7 p.m. CST on Saturday from the Orange Beach Sportsplex.
William Carey becomes the second double-digit seed in the last three years to reach the Semifinals. No. 15 The Master’s (Calif.) played in the 2009 championship final.
