KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Joe Camacho of MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) has been named the NAIA National Football Defensive Player of the Week, Austin Coleman of Saint Francis (Ind.) has been tabbed the National Football Special Teams Player of the Week and Eric Williamson of St. Ambrose (Iowa) received National Football Offensive Player of the Week honors, the national office announced Monday. Camacho, Coleman and Williamson were chosen for their performances during the week of Oct. 15 - 21 and were selected out of a poll of conference and independent award winners.
Camacho, a native of Santa Paula, Calif., led a MidAmerica Nazarene defense that held then-No. 16 Benedictine (Kan.) 24 points under its season scoring average, which entering the weekend ranked fifth in the NAIA. The sophomore linebacker finished the contest with a career-high 14 tackles (six solo), including a sack early in the third quarter that played a key role in forcing a Raven field goal. He also added a forced fumble and pass breakup.
For the season, Camacho ranks third on the team with 42 tackles (18 solo).
Coleman, a senior wide receiver from Fort Wayne, Ind., tied the NAIA career record for touchdowns scored on kickoff returns with his seventh career score in the Cougars 28-19 upset victory against then-No. 5 William Penn (Iowa) last Saturday. His 100-yard touchdown return, which ties for the longest in NAIA history, came early in the third quarter and answered a 98-yard scoring return by the Statesmen. Coleman concluded the game with five returns for a career-best and Cougar single-game record 201 yards.
Coleman, who wins the NAIA National Football Special Teams Player of the Week award for the second time in his career, is the NAIA leader in kickoff return yards with 611 and ranks ninth in all purpose yards per game (154.7).
Williamson, a quarterback from Springfield, Ill., set both a school and Mid-States Football Association single-game record with seven touchdown passes in St. Ambrose's 63-10 win over Olivet Nazarene (Ill.) on Oct. 20. Additionally, the junior set career-highs in completions with 29 and passing yards with 434 despite only playing three quarters. Williamson connected with wide receiver Zach Grant on five-of-seven scores, which set the St. Ambrose single-game record for touchdown receptions.
Williamson ranks in the top 10 nationally in pass efficiency (164.8), passing yards per game (283), total offense per game (293.7) and total passing (1,981).
