KANSAS CITY, Mo. — Ricardo Valsien of Central Methodist (Mo.) has been named the NAIA Men's Soccer National Offensive Player of the Week and Jose Garofalo of Robert Morris (Ill.) has been selected as the NAIA Men's Soccer National Defensive Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Valsien and Garofalo were chosen for their performances during the week of Sept. 9 – 15 and were selected out of a pool of conference, independent, and unaffiliated grouping award winners.Valsien, a senior forward from Boca Raton, Fla., scored the key goal in each of Central Methodist’s games last week. On Wednesday, he netted the game-tying goal in the 84th minute against Hannibal LaGrange (Mo.), off of a feed from Erwin Sanchez Jr., to secure a 2-2 tie with the No. 2 team in the nation. On Sunday, Valsien scored both of the Eagles goals against receiving votes Jamestown (N.D.), including the game-winner in overtime—again off of a Sanchez pass. For the season, Valsien leads the Eagles in goals (4) and points (8). Valsien is the Central Methodist’s first National Player of the Week.
Garofalo, a sophomore goaltender from Chicago, Ill., earned his first career shutout in the Eagles 1-0 upset victory over No. 2 Hannibal LaGrange on Saturday. Garofalo made three crucial saves, including one in the second half, to preserve the Robert Morris win. After appearing in just four games last season, Garofalo has started in goal for three of the Eagles four games this season. He has compiled 12 saves while allowing five goals in 270 minutes of action.
