OLATHE, Kan. - Davenport University (Mich.) golf coach Phil Sweeney has been selected to lead a USA Athletes International (USAAI) team in the IGI Barbados Cup Series in Barbados from June 23 - 30, 2013. The team, composed of select athletes from across the Wolverine Hoosier Athletic Conference (WHAC), will travel to Barbados to compete in a series of matches against the Crossroads League.
Players from across the conference are recommended for the team based on two key elements: (1) their athletic ability and (2) their ability to represent their country, school and hometown in a positive manner.
"Coach Sweeney is a multi-sport coach and is an excellent example of the type of athletic ambassador and mentor USA Athletes International seeks to bring into international competition, stated Nick Vaughn, Golf Program Coordinator at USA Athletes International. He will bring the term ambassador to life on this trip, showing the WHAC athletes and the Bajan community his passion for the sport, conference and his institution."
"Phil is taking the opportunity to represent DU and the WHAC as an ambassador for the game of golf and the USA. He is definitely making the best of this opportunity and we are proud to have him as a part of our program."
In addition to competing, the team will also take plenty of time to tour Barbados, learning all about the history and culture of the island nation.
USA Athletes International is a 501 (c) 3 non-profit organization that seeks to provide educational opportunities that are facilitated through athletic competition. With the exception of the U.S. Olympic program, there are few opportunities for athletes to experience the competition, history, and culture of other countries on an international level.
