KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Tom Halsall of Lee (Tenn.) has been named the NAIA National Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week and Felipe Silva of Hannibal-LaGrange (Mo.) has been tabbed National Men's Soccer Offensive Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Halsall and Silva were selected based on their performances from Oct. 22 - 28 and were chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.
Halsall, a 6-foot-2 freshman goalkeeper from Manchester, England, was instrumental in two key victories for the Flames last week. His efforts helped Lee to earn a berth in the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) Tournament. Halsall posted three saves in the 4-1 victory against Truett-McConnell (Ga.) on Oct. 24. In a road match at No. 12 Southern Poly (Ga.) on Oct. 27, he earned a 1-0 shutout as he halted four shots on goal. The shutout was just the third time this year (in 15 matches) that Southern Poly was held scoreless.
On the season, Halsall is 7-7-1 overall with 54 saves and a 1.78 goals against average.
Silva, a 5-foot-8 junior forward from Belo Horizonte, Brazil, ended his week with five goals, three assists and 13 points in a 2-0 week for the Trojans. In the 8-0 win over Benedictine-Springfield (Ill.) on Oct. 24, he went for a pair of goals and helped out on two others. Three days later, Silva had a hat trick to go along with one assist in the 10-3 win over Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.). Silva has compiled four matches of two-or-more goals on the season.
Silva ranks fifth in the NAIA in total assists (14), eighth in total points (44) and 21st in total goals (15). The 44 points sets a Hannibal-LaGrange single-season record.
