Baseball Pitcher & Player of the Week
KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Andy Kovarik of Saint Xavier (Ill.) has been named the NAIA National Baseball Pitcher of the Week and teammate Brad Myjak has been tabbed National Baseball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Kovarik and Myjak were selected based on their performances from April 9 - 15 and were chosen out of a poll of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.
Kovarik tossed eight innings to earn the victory in the Cougars 9-3 win against NCAA Division I Northwestern (Ill.) on April 10. The Crystal Lake, Ill., native scattered three hits, struck out three and walked four in his longest outing of the season. All three runs allowed by the freshman right-hander were unearned.
On the year, Kovarik is 3-0 with a 2.70 earned run average in six appearances.
Myjak, a Tinley Park, Ill. native, hit .441 with two home runs, three doubles, 13 runs scored and 22 RBIs to lead Saint Xavier to a 5-3 record during the week, including a victory against Northwestern and a sweep of Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference rival Trinity International (Ill.). The sophomore left fielder opened the week with a home run, two runs scored and four RBIs in a 2-for-5 effort against the Wildcats. Myjak's home run came in the first inning, which sparked the nine run output by the Cougars. He continued to assert himself as a dominant force in the middle of the Saint Xavier lineup with two additional four RBI games in the Cougar's 27-6 and 18-6 wins against Trinity International on April 11. In weekend action against Purdue North Central (Ind.), Myjak went 5-for-13 (.385) including a four-hit and seven-RBI effort in game one on April 15.
On the season, Myjak ranks 12th nationally with 49 RBIs and currently owns a .309 batting average and .551 slugging percentage. Additionally, he leads the team with six home runs and ranks second in doubles with 13.
