KANSAS CITY, Mo. - Luke Thomas of MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) has been named the NAIA National Division I Men's Basketball Player of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Thomas, who is the final weekly honoree for the 2012-13 season, was selected based on his performances from Feb. 25 - March 3 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.
Thomas, a 6-foot-8 forward, averaged 22 points and 9.0 rebounds while shooting 65.9 percent (27-of-41) from the field to lead MidAmerica Nazarene to three victories last week, including a pair of road wins at then-No. 9 Evangel (Mo.), 99-92, on Feb. 25 and at then-No. 22 Culver-Stockton (Mo.), 86-74, on March 2.
The junior from Raymore, Mo., began the week with a stellar performance against Evangel, finishing with 20 points and 13 rebounds. The double-double was Thomas' 14th of the season, which leads the Pioneers and ranks sixth nationally. Thomas followed that with 15 points, six rebounds and three assists in third-seeded MidAmerica Nazarene's Heart of America Athletic Conference (HAAC) Tournament quarterfinal victory (69-68) against sixth seed Baker (Kan.) on Feb. 28. He ended the week with a season-high 31 points on 14-of-19 (73.7 percent) shooting from the field against Culver-Stockton in the HAAC Tournament semifinals.
Thomas ranks second nationally in defensive rebounds per game (6.7), fourth in total rebounds (288) and 10th in total rebounds per game (9.0)
