NAIA Women’s Tennis Coaches’ Top 25 Poll – No. 4

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Brenau (Ga.) sits atop the fourth edition of the 2013 NAIA Women’s Tennis Coaches’ Top 25 Poll, the national office announced Tuesday. The Golden Tigers received all 12 first-place votes for 312 points to secure the top spot, for the second-consecutive week.
Brenau suffered its second defeat of the season on March 24 with an, 7-0, loss to NCAA Division I Alabama Birmingham. The Golden Tigers look to bounce back on April 4 in a tough Southern State Athletic Conference (SSAC) showdown against No. 3 Auburn Montgomery (Ala.). Both Auburn Montgomery and Brenau are undefeated in SSAC East conference action.
Holding steady at No. 2 is William Carey (Miss.) with 302 points. Auburn Montgomery comes in at No. 3, notching 291 points. No. 4 SCAD Savannah (Ga.) and No. 5 Lindsey Wilson (Ky.) round out the top five with 282 and 271 points, respectively.
Joining the Top 25 this week is No. 22 Southeastern (Fla.) and No. 24 SCAD Atlanta (Ga.). Southeastern defeated NCAA Division II West Chester (Pa.), 9-0, on March 18. The next day, the Fire fell, 7-0, to NCAA Division I Connecticut. SCAD Atlanta is 4-0 this season. In its last victory on March 29, the Bees defeated Milligan (Tenn.) 6-3. SCAD Atlanta also owns victories over Bethel (Tenn.), 9-0, Reinhardt (Ga.), 7-0, and Columbia (S.C.) 9-0.
Falling from the poll is Robert Morris (Ill.) (No. 23) and Milligan (Tenn.) (No. 25).
Nine of the 13 conferences/independents/unaffiliated groupings are represented in the poll with the SSAC leading all leagues with six Top 25 members: Brenau, William Carey, Auburn Montgomery, No. 15 Coastal Georgia, No. 20 Lee (Tenn.) and No. 23 Belhaven (Miss.). The Sun Conference follows with five teams.
The poll was voted upon by a panel of head coaches representing each of the conferences/independents/unaffiliated groupings. The fifth regular-season poll will be announced on April 16.
Notes: (All information as of the 2000 season) Auburn Montgomery (Ala.) has been ranked No. 1 a total of 69 times., the most All-Time… Brenau (Ga.) is next closest with 11 No. 1 rankings, followed by former-NAIA member Fresno Pacific (Calif.) with eight, former- NAIA member Shorter (Ga.) with three and Northwood (Fla.) with two … Auburn Montgomery topped each poll from Feb. 11, 2004, to May 1, 2010, a span of 47-straight No. 1 rankings, which is an NAIA record … The next closest streak is just eight by Fresno Pacific, which garnered the top selection in all eight polls in 2011 … Northwood gained its only two No. 1 rankings in school history in 2003 when it went on to win the national championship … Auburn Montgomery has been ranked in the top five since, Feb. 11, 2004… The last time a non Southern State Athletic Conference School was No. 1, was in 2011 when former-NAIA member Fresno Pacific (Calif.) claimed the No. 1 ranking all season.
