Player of the Week - No. 1

KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Amber Williams of Azusa Pacific (Calif.) has been named the first NAIA National Division I Women’s Basketball Player of the Week of the 2011-12 season, the national office announced Tuesday. Williams was selected based on her performances from Dec. 26 – Jan. 1 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.

Williams powered the Cougars to a trio of wins at the Biola (Calif.) Holiday Classic, Dec. 28 – 30. She recorded double-doubles in points and rebounds in all three games, averaging 25.0 points and 14.0 rebounds per contest. Her 31 points in Azusa Pacific’s 84-65 win over Montana Tech on Dec. 29 were an individual season high. She also shot 45.5 percent (30 for 66) on the week.

The 6-foot senior center from Claremont, Calif., has now posted double-doubles in seven of her 12 games this season. She ranks No. 3 in the NAIA with an average of 12.8 rebounds per game and sixth with a scoring average of 19.9. She is the only player in NAIA Division I to rank in the top 10 of both categories. Her 18 blocks are the 27th most in the NAIA.
