KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Petra Pesic of William Carey (Miss.) has been named NAIA Women's Tennis Player of the Week, the national office announced Wednesday. Pesic was selected based on her performances from March 26 – April 1 and was chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated group player of the week selections. Pesic is the first women’s tennis player from William Carey to receive the award since it began in 2011.
The sophomore native of Biograd Na Moru, Croatia, pushed her season singles mark to 12-5 by recovering after rough first game for a 0-6, 6-1, 6-4 victory over Tarah Garner of No. 16 Lee (Tenn.) at No. 3 singles on March 30 and then a 6-1, 6-0 domination of Margot Vetter of No. 13 Shorter (Ga.) at No. 2 singles on March 31. The Lady Crusaders notched victories in both matches, boosting their record to 12-6 overall and 3-1 in Southern States Athletic Conference action.
Pesic paired with teammate Mallin Collin in doubles play to grab wins over duos from Lee and Shorter. Pesic and Collin defeated Lee’s No. 3 doubles team 8-2 and then proceeded to triumph over Shorter’s Aurore Beltrando and Alicia Gallard, 8-4. Pesic improved her record to 11-6 in doubles this season.
The next women’s tennis Player of the Week will be announced on April 11.
