KANSAS CITY, Mo. – Justin Moore of Georgetown (Ky.) has been named the NAIA National Baseball Player of the Week and Rey Rodriguez of Robert Morris (Ill.) has been tabbed National Pitcher of the Week, the national office announced Tuesday. Moore and Rodriguez were selected based on their performances from March 18 – 24 and were chosen out of a pool of conference/independent/unaffiliated groupings.
Moore, a native of Los Angeles, Calif., led Georgetown to four wins last week, including a double-header sweep of defending national champion Tennessee Wesleyan. The junior outfielder hit .533 (8-for-15) with two doubles, two triples, six RBI, six runs scored, five walks and a stolen base.
Moore, who recorded three multi-hit games, including a 3-for-4, two RBI effort in the Tiger’s 5-4 game-one victory against Tennessee Wesleyan on March 19. In game two, Moore added another two hits, including an RBI double in the top of the second to spark a four-run inning for Georgetown. He continued his hot week with two hits, two runs and three walks in game one of a three game series against Cumberlands (Ky.) on March 22. Moore followed that with an RBI triple and run scored against the Patriots one day later.
On the season, Moore is fifth on the team with a .282 batting average.
Rodriguez, a left-handed pitcher from Valencia, Venezuela, picked up his second win of the season in dynamic fashion with a 5-0 complete game no-hitter against Lindenwood-Belleville (Ill.) on March 22. The senior recorded seven strikeouts and two walks over a season-high seven innings to earn the decision.
Rodriguez is 2-1 this season with a 2.65 ERA in 17 innings. He ranks amongst the top 25 nationally in runs allowed (5), strikeouts per nine innings (11.1), hits allowed (14) and walks allowed (4).
